Nigerian citizens are expected to have a Tax Identification Number (TIN). Whether you are a civil servant or you work in a private organization, or you have your business endeavor, you should have your own TIN.

You might be wondering of what use is a TIN, well first and foremost, it is a number that shows that you as an individual, or your business or your organization is an acknowledged and registered tax payer in Nigeria.

The new financial bill has even made it compulsory so it is something that you have to get.

There are procedures and steps that you have to follow if you want to get your own TIN. This is as stipulated by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) in Nigeria.

You don’t have to stress yourself by worrying too much about the procedures that you have to follow in order to obtain your TIN. A modern and more advanced electronic system has been introduced by the Joint Tax Board and this is interconnected to every state.

This has made the process way easier and it comes at no cost to you. This new system has also eradicated the problem of multiple taxation on individuals and companies by the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS).

How To Apply For Tax Identification Number (TIN) Online in Nigeria Easily

One of the main things that you will have to do if you want to get your TIN is to fill an application form. This is for the verification of your identity. There are important things that you have to take note of when you are filling the application form and we will point them out to you. You can get this application form from any tax office close to you.

Please bear in mind that if you are applying as an individual, your TIN will be given to you based on your BVN (Bank Verification Number) or NIN (National Identity Number). This is as laid down by the Joint Tax Board and it is shown on their portal. So before applying for TIN as an individual make sure that you already have your NIN or BVN.

That is not the same requirement for non-individuals such as Limited Liability Companies, Incorporated Trustees, Enterprises, Cooperative Society, MDAs, Trade Association amongst others. We will talk about these later on in this write up.

Filling the TIN Application Form

Take note of the following when you are filling the TIN application form online.

a. Make sure that you fill any section on the form that is marked by an asterisks (*) symbol.
b. Ensure that the email address you entered is a valid email address.
c. Remember to enter an 11 digits registered mobile phone number.
d. Make sure that characters that you enter for your name and address does not exceed 200 words. This includes symbols and letters.

Requirements For Getting Tax Identification Number (TIN)

Individuals

If you are an individual and you want to get your TIN or your business has not been registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) then this section is for you.

The requirements include;

a. A properly filled TIN application form.
b. A valid means of identification which could be an international passport, National Drivers’ License, National Identity Card, or Staff Identity Card. This is for identity verification.

Company

If your company or your business has been duly registered with the CAC, the requirements for obtaining your TIN are as follows;

a. A properly filled TIN application form.
b. Business name registration certificate (for Enterprise or Business) or Certificate of incorporation (for Companies). This should bear the registration number.
c. Documents showing the date the business commenced, current address as well as principal location of the business.

Whether as an individual or a corporate body, by the time you are done providing the necessary requirements, you will have to update the TIN gotten from the tax office. For this, all that is required is your valid email address as well as your registered phone number. Remember that you already provided said information when you were filling the application form.

Verification

After all is said and done, you will have to verify the updated TIN. The purpose of this is to ensure that your TIN is in line with doing business transactions with other Government bodies such as NAFDAC, Nigerian Custom Service, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), etc.

There are some instances where registering for TIN comes with registration for Value Added Tax (VAT) and Company Income Tax. Do not be surprised if this is the case with you. This is for when your organization or business has been registered and has been conducting business for six months.

Ensure that you file monthly VAT and tax returns after you have registered your Tax Identification Number (TIN) as this is mandatory.
